CPL Architecture
haynes-Taylor YMCa, greensboro, nc

I was excited to photograph a new project type for CPL Architecture — the Haynes-Taylor YMCA in Greensboro, NC. The lead architect, Ari Hood, and lead designer, Torrey Orlopp, had recently renovated one of the wings and wanted to capture it in its purest state — clean, thoughtful, and full of potential before it filled with activity.

To bring a sense of life into the space, they invited a few of their children to model for us. I truly love working with kids. They bring an unfiltered joy and authenticity that adds a natural energy to architectural imagery — especially in a place designed to serve families and community.

We photographed the project in January at 23 degrees Fahrenheit. The trees were bare and the light was cool, but I wanted the final images to feel warm and inviting — reflective of the YMCA’s mission. In post-production, I subtly warmed the exteriors to create a more welcoming tone. I also refined portions of the pavement and replaced interior window views with carefully composed exterior photographs taken on site.

One detail that often gets overlooked during site prep is the windows. These were particularly dirty, and rather than letting that limit the final result, I captured clean exterior plates that mirrored the interior compositions. Later, I composited and balanced them so the views feel natural and seamless.

That extra level of intention — both in capture and in post — is what elevates the final work. It allows the architecture to be experienced as it was designed: clear, cohesive, and at its best.

If you’re looking to showcase healthcare spaces with photography that communicates world-class design, function, and patient experience, I’d love to help. Let’s connect and explore how to bring your vision to life.

As the primary coordinator of project photography at my architecture and engineering firm, I have worked with Paul on several projects. I have found him to be exceptionally organized, responsive, and accommodating. Even when we faced shifting construction completion dates and unexpected staging challenges, he remained flexible and solution-oriented, helping us problem-solve and make things work on tight timelines!

His professionalism and positive attitude makes everything run smoothly, and we’re very happy with the final results. For firms that need to coordinate a lot of project photography captures at once, having a photographer like Paul who stays on top of things and helps to build schedules is a major asset.

Looking forward to working together again in the future!
