Carolina Theatre

Carolina Theatre | A Century of Charlotte’s Story

Step inside nearly 100 years of Charlotte history at the Carolina Theatre. First opening its doors on March 7, 1927, the theatre debuted with the silent comedy A Kiss in a Taxi—a fitting start for what would become one of the city’s most iconic gathering spaces.

Historic Highlights:

  • Built in 1927 at a cost of $750,000

  • Originally seated 1,450 guests beneath ornate wrought-iron chandeliers

  • Charlotte’s first air-conditioned building

  • Hosted Elvis Presley in 1956

  • The Sound of Music ran for a record-breaking 79 weeks

The theatre has witnessed decades of cultural change—including the pivotal moment of desegregation in 1963, when its doors finally opened to all patrons. After closing in 1978, the building faced an uncertain future. For more than 40 years, passionate advocates and preservationists fought to protect and restore this architectural treasure.

In March 2025, thanks to the Foundation For The Carolinas and countless preservation efforts, the Carolina Theatre reopened—restored to its 1927 glory with thoughtful modern updates.

Today, the Carolina Theatre stands once again as Charlotte’s “community living room,” hosting everything from live music and films to comedy, town halls, and cultural events. It’s not just a venue—it’s a living piece of Charlotte’s heritage, welcoming new generations to make memories of their own.

If you’re stewarding a historic or cultural space and want photography that celebrates its story while inviting new audiences in, I’d be honored to help. Let’s schedule a time to talk about how I can bring your vision to life.
