The Pearl innovation District, Kimley-Horn
Charlotte, NC
I was thrilled to be commissioned by Kimley-Horn to photograph the landscape architecture and public spaces at The Pearl in Charlotte. Built on ground once home to Brooklyn, a thriving Black neighborhood largely dismantled through urban renewal, the district carries a history that shaped both the landscape design and my approach to photographing it.
Walking the site with one of the project’s lead landscape architects revealed the care behind its gathering spaces and historical elements. The Purposeful Walk shares former residents’ stories through interpretive signage, oral histories, and maps, while the terraced central plaza draws inspiration from Jacob’s Ladder, the exterior staircase at Brooklyn’s Myers Street School. Photographing from sunrise through late afternoon, I followed the changing light to capture the design’s forms and textures, along with its invitation to pause, listen, and remember.

“Paul is wonderful to work with. He takes the time to understand the subject and space he is asked to photograph, which produces results with more meaning. His communication is quick and informative, and his asset delivery is within a reasonable expectation of time. I especially appreciate his approach to business development (gaining contracts) as it’s communicative and not aggressive. I look forward to working with him again.”
“Working with Paul Lange was an absolute pleasure! His innate ability to capture the essence and soul of interior spaces is unparalleled. Every shot was meticulously composed to highlight the design’s every nuance and beauty. Paul has a keen eye for detail that highlights the character of the room. Not only was Paul professional and accommodating, but very patient when working with us. The images he produced elevated our designs, showcasing them in a way that mesmerized our clients. We highly recommend Paul.”
